Course Abstract

Personality and Temperament: Connecting with Young Clients is a 3-hour online continuing education (CE) course that demonstrates how differences in personality and temperament impact children’s behavior, and how adults communicate and connect with them.

Understanding differences in temperament and personality among adults and children will ultimately assist us in developing better relationships with our clients and enhance therapy interventions, plans, and goals. Within the context of each type, this course will describe motivators that are type-specific, discuss behavioral “triggers,” and identify strategies and techniques for engaging children’s cooperation, while freeing them from negative roles.

We will also discuss ways clinicians can help parents to recognize their own traits and tendencies, identify their children’s personality and temperament, and learn to become more effective behavior managers.

Many of the same observations and interventions can be applied to children who are experiencing learning differences or developmental challenges.

Course #31-35 | 2021 | 54 pages | 20 posttest questions

Learning Objectives

  1. Name four primary personality traits and four tendencies
  2. Specify essential characteristics of each of the nine temperament traits
  3. Discuss four “triggers” that can precipitate conflict when individual personalities and traits are disregarded
  4. Give one example of a motivator that is effective with each of the personality and temperament types
  5. Describe three techniques that can be used to free children from negative roles
  6. Identify one strategy to engage cooperation with each of the various personality types

Customer Testimonials

N.G. (OT)

Thank you for the useful information presented. I learned a lot that will benefit my scope of practice.

J.K. (PY)

This course was very enjoyable and educational. Two of the many benefits are that the material did a great job of defining and differentiating personality from temperament, and provided so many detailed suggestions and strategies for connecting with young clients with various personality types and temperaments. Thank you.

J.P. (SLP)

I enjoyed this course for several reasons. Each section not only defined, but also provided specific suggestions to address perceived challenges related to temperament and personality. Sharing activities, along with resources, is always beneficial. I particularly appreciated the section where information was provided on how clinicians can own their own perceptions and behaviors that may be complicating situations and impacting their treatment sessions. The exercises provided at the conclusion were helpful. This informatnoi is also useful to us all as it relates to our own friends and family.

J.M. (SLP)

This was a very informative and thorough course. It deserves to be read a second time with specific children in mind. Strategic management suggestions were excellent. Well organized.

K.H. (SW)

I really liked this course. I have worked with adults more than children, but the knowledge and strategies described here seem like such a better way to negotiate relationships with children.

J.B. (PY)

Lots of interesting material, clearly presented. Valuable insights. Thank you!

L.G. (SLP)

Very thorough presentation that provided a different way of looking at personality traits.

R.S. (SLP)

Loved it! Wish I had this information when my kids were little. Still applicable information to my setting and work with children.

K.V. (SLP)

So much useful information was presented in this course! A great framework even for understanding personality and temperament in the adults that we treat. Of course, activities and wording of responses, etc. would need to be modified to be more age appropriate. However, I felt that this presenter provided the key points needed in order to understand how to adapt appropriately for different age groups.

R.A. (ND)

Two of the many benefits are that the material did a great job of defining and differentiating personality from temperament, and provided so many detailed suggestions and strategies for connecting with young clients with various personality types and temperaments. Thank you.

D.P. (PY)

This was a very informative and thorough course. It deserves to be read a second time with specific children in mind. Strategic management suggestions were excellent. Well organized.

A.B. (SLP)

Although I believe this information about temperament/personality can be applied to adults from the material in this course, I would love to see a course with strategies for motivation/guidance when working through adults based on their temperaments too. Thank you.

D.O. (SLP)

Learned a lot from this course and have much to share with parents of the kids I see.  Very interesting and helpful.

N.H. (SLP)

The information presented in this course was a nice review for me. As a therapist I will work with children that have all of these personalities and temperaments.

S.K. (OT)

Course content clearly stressed identifying children as individuals with different personalities, temperaments, traits, and triggers before corresponding those traits to support and intervention.

R.D. (SLP)

I gained a lot of information from this article. In fact as I read the article I was able to identify several students on my caseload and the reason for their behaviors. Excellent article.

Good stuff for a pediatric OT.

This was insightful and very practical for working with diverse children.
