High Functioning Autism in Children
Adina Soclof, MS, CCC-SLP; Leo Christie, PhD, LMFT
$49.00
Course Abstract
High Functioning Autism in Children is a 4-hour online continuing education (CE) course that provides strategies to help children with HFA navigate the “neurotypical” world with success.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as of April 2018, the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasing. This increase includes children on the higher end of the spectrum; those who have what is informally referred to as “high functioning” ASD. In this course we will use the term “HFA” and explore and discuss why children and adolescents with HFA behave the way they do.
Professionals will learn strategies for helping parents manage their child with HFA at home, particularly toward learning the skills required to set themselves up for success, ease transitions, and prevent meltdowns. Interventions for school success will encompass organizational skills and strategies to improve language, narratives, reading comprehension, writing, and attention skills.
Finally, children with HFA struggle socially, particularly with understanding the unspoken rules of social situations. Professionals will learn to assist children with the development of social skills, which include conversational skills so that they may better relate to their peers, and how to interpret the hidden curriculum in many different environments. Professionals can help their clients discover their strengths, while harnessing their capabilities, allowing them to navigate the “neurotypical” world with success.

This was a well organized and thorough course to refresh and to update my practice. I would recommend this to others for a good overview, and I am likely to refer back to this course material.
Outstanding training with very useful information for my practice. Thank you.
Great course. The author presented complete, relevant, and current information about HFA. It was easy to read.
Course material presented clearly with many examples.
Very well organized. I appreciated the references and direct links for more information.
This is an amazing training. I am a therapist at an elementary school and I often have to work with students in conjunction with teachers and parents due to "acting out" behavior in the classroom. Sometimes it is difficult to help general education teachers and administrators understand the accommodations and services needed for students with high functioning Autism. This is even more challenging when the student is not yet identified or has a private evaluation/diagnosis from outside of the school system. I am going to use some of the these materials to educate my school team and develop some targeted interventions in conjunction with our SLP's. Thank you so much for giving me some of the language to explain the behaviors of our students with ASD and some starting points for working on interventions with our team. This has truly been one of the best trainings I have taken online!
The material is laid out in a very clear and logical manner. As always, no matter how much I think I know about topic, your courses always teach me something new.
Excellent course. Lots of ideas for therapists to use. It was easy to naviagate course.
This significantly added to my prior knowledge about HFA. It was beautifully presented and very interesting! Truly beneficial for every one.
Thank you for providing this course. I believe it is an important topic.
This was a clearly-written, well-organized, and particularly helpful and practical course-- and it was a pleasure to take it!!!
