Course Abstract

Healing the Healer is a 1-hour online continuing education (CE) course that seeks to cultivate the emotional well-being of healthcare professionals who have been on the front lines supporting others.

As professionals in the business of supporting others, our vulnerability to burnout is inevitable. Add to that the fear, grief, fatigue, and trauma that resulted from the covid pandemic, and the risk of burnout suddenly increases dramatically. Self-care is no longer a hypothetical cliche that we can work into our lives as time allows. We must make intentional time to heal ourselves so that we can be effective mentally and emotionally for others.

This course will present the idea of a ‘Wounded Healer,’ consider the causes of wounds, and differentiate pandemic wounds from other types of occupation-related stress or burnout. It will then introduce a scientific framework for understanding how human flourishing can be nurtured, consisting of four pillars of well-being (awareness, connection, insight, and purpose).

Next, we will learn evidence-based, creative self-care strategies proven effective in healing the healer, aligning with the four pillars of well-being. These strategies will illustrate how each technique may be applied to your own life or to those you work with and support. Links to guided exercises are included whenever possible to provide further enrichment opportunities to explore these self-care techniques. Finally, an ending prompts you to create your own realistic, personalized self-care plan (worksheet included).

Customer Testimonials

D.V. (PY)

I'm going to print the course so that I may now re-read it, and probably re-read it again.  It really packed a wallop for me. I certainly have a fair knowledge of Mindfulness, but somehow this was presented from a slightly different perspective than I have carried with me. And I certainly think it is worth understanding this perspective. Thank you and the author very much.

M.M. (PY)

A must-take course for any mental health professional!

J.B. (PY)

I'm recommending this course to others!

L.P. (SLP)

Great information laid out in a very organized and practical manner.

L.N. (SLP)

The content was relevant and is useful to my current setting, as I am responsible for overseeing the clinical education of graduate students at the university where I am employed. I particularly appreciated the section on self-compassion. I feel that this is something that we can be easily overlooked, as clinicians tend to focus solely on the needs of our clients and their families.

I took the course, “Healing the Healer” and it was soo helpful! On my one day off, I’ve been utilizing the resources that were given through that course content and I am feeling hopeful and inspired again! It’s been a long time since I have felt that way! Thank you for having such great courses with excellent, helpful, applicable, well-written content! I am so happy I found your website! Your courses help to enjoy learning!

J.F.S. (SLP)

This one was much NEEDED! Thank you VERY much for expanding the relevant topics for our field. After all, there isn't a healing if the healer is lacking. Please keep adding more like this.

M.V. (PY)

I thought this course was extremely helpful and informative ... and, because of my extensive training in some of the content, I had expected it would be primarily review. It was way more than that. I appreciated the mix of information and spirit in which the author presented the material. There is a wealth of help in this course. Thank you for making it available!

C.H. (SLP)

The references and information provided were current and relevant to working as a therapist. I would recommend this course to others.

D.C. (SLP)

Great course for self-healing and self-care.

A.K. (MHC)

Thank you for providing a succinct and accessible resource for counselor self-care. This profession attracts caregivers, and we often forget to take care of ourselves. Part of the reason I took this course is because it was short. Yet, it was still useful and relevant.
