Clinical Supervision for Mental Health Professionals
Laura More, MSW, LCSW; Leo Christie, PhD, LMFT$49.00
Course Abstract
Clinical Supervision for Mental Health Professionals is a 4-hour online continuing education (CE) course that will present evidence-based research and best practices in clinical supervision of mental health professionals.
As we discuss the various aspects of supervision, we will consider evidence-based research and guidelines as recommended by the American Psychological Association (APA), The Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), and more.
Topics presented will include developmental models of supervision, ethics, risk management, the use of technology, and diversity awareness.
We will discuss the goals of the supervisory experience and highlight strategies for building an open and trusting relationship between the supervisor and the supervisee, considering how this may be different from a therapeutic relationship. Information on record keeping and accurate documentation is provided and performance evaluations will be included, along with information about disciplinary actions, disciplinary supervision, and termination.
Lastly, we will discuss self-care and burnout prevention. The information presented here is an overview and it is recommended that professionals use this course as a guide for further study and to develop their own competency as clinical supervisors.
*Note: This course meets the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, MFT & Mental Health Counseling’s requirement of 4 hours qualified supervision training in every third renewal cycle and information specific to Florida is included after the ‘Resources’ section at the end of the course.

Customer Testimonials
I used this as a refresher course; I completed the OK supervisors training for LPCs 2 yrs ago and only recently have a supervisee. This course was a great refresher and gave me new ideas that my original course did not address.
I especially found the section on digital media and confidentiality/privacy to be applicable- particularly now (with Covid 19 leading therapists to have virtual sessions).
I definitely fall into the category of a clinician who has been placed in supervisory roles with little to no training on how to be an effective clinical supervisor, which of course left me anxious and lacking confidence. This course was incredibly helpful in identifying the things I am doing well, but most importantly giving me guidance and a structure to base future supervisory relationships on. It was very beneficial, and I am glad I took the course.
Hi. I really enjoyed this CE workshop. Overall the material was nicely laid out and organized. The content was solid and the topics discussed were great. If there was only one thing I might suggest, it might be to have had a little more in there about professional counselor/mental health counselors (at times it felt like the content was geared more towards psychologists). With that said, I appreciated the discussion from all the different disciplines out there - it was great to see. Thank you once again for a great course. I really thought it was nicely done.
Clear, organized, well-curated content. Relevant for my real-world scenario!
More Testimonials
The breadth and depth of this course are wide and deep. It could be two courses: 1.supervision and 2.tele-medical health; however, the course was excellent, well written by the author, and I learned a lot. Thank you.
This was an excellent course addressing important areas of concern and knowledge in the practice of supervision. I wish that it was a requirement for all clinical supervisors to complete before jumping into the pool with new clinicians.
I appreciate the support when I had a question. I have taken multiple Supervision CE courses over the years (I'm 75 now) as I have supervised many supervisees and taken many of these courses. I think this was the best. I like the author's perspective and representation. I liked the online format. I will be saving the pages for this course, because there were things I'd like to share with my interns for the way they were presented. Thank you for this very good deal. It was valuable.
Thanks for making things easy to earn the CEUs.
I throughly enjoyed this learning process and would use it again.
Probably one of the better courses on supervision that I've taken.
Organized, articulate and succinct. Great CEU to learn from!
I didn't want to take a course without a presenter, but this one turned out to be very well laid out and easy to follow. I especially liked that there was a wealth of information.
This was my introduction to supervision and a wonderful foundation!
So much new information! This is an exceptionally well developed course and I am really pleased that it was a requirement for my license. Since I don't do supervision I may not have opted to take this course, but I am very glad I did. There is important information about "deliberate practice" besides the supervisory aspects. Great!!
Great job integrating quality research into the course!
This was really good information, including information that is not typically reviewed in other ethics courses. I really enjoyed it.
The course was interesting and well organized.
Great reminder of the complexity of the supervisory role, and the competency, ethical and professional aspects to being a supervisor in the mental health field. Material included current and topical points as well such social media concerns. Thank you for a great CE program.
Excellent overview of the complexities of supervision, with concrete examples and numerous resources.
One of the better supervision articles/trainings that I have had. Looking forward to incorporating much of this into practice! Thank you.
I look forward reviewing to the suggested links to offered document examples, measurements, and detailed framework for supervision.
Good and practical information for supervisors that I will implement better.
Great learning experience and very iinformative. The website is easy to navigate.
The content was easy to understand and the case studies showed how theory is applied to everyday practice.
This course was a wonderful "refresher course" for me. Well written and easy to understand. It also had references from the person who was one of MY supervisors!
I thought this course was well organized. The examples given were excellent in better understanding of the issues and liabilities.
Thank you for providing the educational material in a clear and concise manner. The information was a good refresher and provided additional learning content. The site is user friendly and I will definitely take other courses in the future.
Excellent material presented in an easy to learn fashion.
It was a joy to take this course. I wish this had been available when I first started supervising staff and am very glad to hear there is more emphasis being placed on the importance of good supervision training. The information contained in this course encompassed important areas of concern and clearly stated how to deal with issues of concern that could arise in the supervision experience. My thanks for this support. Also, it's a great website. Many thanks.
This was well written, clear, informative, and helpful. It was very helpful to have the test to follow along during study. It helped with noting key points and improved retention.
Excellent course, very detailed and informative.
Great course. The review of educational and research literature was refreshing. Good review. Thank you.
Appreciated quick response from staff when I was having trouble on the website.
A wonderful review on the best practices in supervision.
Lots of good information to apply to my practice.
Course was very informative reflecting current law and professional requirements. I was very informed on section of social medias and problems that can impact professionally legally. Thank you for making this course available on line.
A great deal of information presented in a concise manner.
This was a wonderful format for clinicians who have been supervisors for a few years. Thank you!
I appreciated the links to other websites for surveys, questionnaires, and information on supervision.
This course was excellent. Thank you talking in length about outcome measures and cultural awareness'. I will take this to my team on next clinical meeting.
This was an excellent course, one of the best on-line courses I've ever taken. My one issue is that there was TOO much information included! This could have easily been an 8-hour course. I will look for more courses offered by these fine clinicians.
Probably the most thorough of the online traiings on supervision that I have completed. Great value.
