Course Abstract

Anxiety: Practical Management Techniques is a 4-hour online continuing education (CE) course that offers a collection of ready-to-use anxiety management tools.

Nearly every client who walks through a health professional’s door is experiencing some form of anxiety. Even if they are not seeking treatment for a specific anxiety disorder, they are likely experiencing anxiety as a side effect of other clinical issues. For this reason, a solid knowledge of anxiety management skills should be a basic component of every therapist’s repertoire.

Clinicians who can teach practical anxiety management techniques have tools that can be used in nearly all clinical settings and client diagnoses. Anxiety management benefits the clinician as well, helping to maintain energy, focus, and inner peace both during and between sessions.

L.L. (PY)

There was much that I liked in the course; the pithy opening questions of "Do you breathe?" & "Do you think?" nicely modeled an engaging approach.  The techniques were nicely presented in a coherent fashion and the material will be useful for on-going reference to brush up on the various techniques.  Three rather small points caught my tendency to precision in referencing theoretical concepts.  -Page 3 presents anxiety as "common"; if one looks to the origins of Freud's formulation of "signal anxiety" then it is more accurate to say that anxiety is fundamental and universal and, at its core, necessary for survival and beneficial.  -Page 11 states that CBT postulates that thoughts create feelings and I read that as an overstatement of the CBT premise.  Rather, thoughts influence and shape feelings.   -Page 39 references "releasing codependency"; Melody Beattie's groundbreaking presentation of the concept highlights that "co-dependency" is an intertwined dynamic of one person being dependent on a substance and the second person being dependent on the first person's problems so that the second person has a clearly defined role or sense of purpose.  If the first person overcomes the chemical dependency then the second person loses the role of "rescuer"or "victim" and, thus, the second person is as dependent of the substance as the first. This is a much more complex dynamic that over-worrying about someone else's problems. I hope these comments do not take away from my opening statement that the course has much value.
