Course Abstract

Motivating Children to Learn is a 4-hour online continuing education (CE) course that provides strategies and activities to help children overcome their academic and social challenges.

This course describes various challenges that can sidetrack children in their developmental and educational processes, leaving them with a sense of discouragement and helplessness. Such challenges include learning disabilities, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, behavior disorders, and executive functioning deficits. Left unchecked, these difficulties can cause children to believe that they are not capable of success in school, which can precipitate a downward spiral of poor self-esteem and, eventually, school failure.

However, when parents, teachers, and therapists engage children in activities that develop their innate intelligence and strengths, children may develop a growth mindset and love of learning that lasts a lifetime. This course details multiple strategies and techniques for recognizing individual needs, arranging for a series of successful experiences, building children’s self-esteem, and supporting children’s learning,.

The author encourages therapsists to focus on children's multiple intelligences and strengths; consider children's learning styles; teach growth mindset and problem-solving skills; and provide effetive praise as they support childeren's learning. The course highlights the importance of addressing the whole child; teaching children to recognize their own strengths and weakesses; providing chidlrne the skills necessary to set them up for academic success and lifelolng learning. The many charts included in the course cna be helpful to therapists as they assess individual learning styles and characteristics. There are many activity examples and resources that can help therapists address learning needs of children as they remediate speecha nd languge skills in therapy. SLPs can benefit from this information and incorporate the many suggested strategies into therapy sessions.

K.T. (SLP)

The lists of strengths is a great resource for any clinical professional!

A.W. (SLP)

I loved this course! I'm so glad that you are teaching that "good job" is not an appropriate compliment to a child. I've learned so much through this and others like it about how to edify a child, preschooler in my case. I enjoyed reviewing the multiple intelligences here. I'm continuing to expand my understanding of executive functions and am grateful for this and others like it.

S.H. (OT)

Great course! I highly recommend it  to other professionals in pediatric therapy.

L.M. (SLP)

Although I've been an SLP for over 40 years, and have studied Dweck and Bloomquist, the organization of this program was very helpful as a reminder of specifics, and specific prompts /responses, for children and teens.

J.S. (PY)

This is another course I find helpful to review. I especially like the breakdown of types of praise as it correlates with the Parent-Child Interaction model of therapy as well as Russell Barkley's working, including the interventions he presented in his book, Defiant Children. Delivering effective praise is something a lot of parents have a hard time with due to the pace of life. This course is a reminder of the importance of targeting praise to children in a way that helps them feel validated and learn. Te test for this course is also well-worded and fair. Thanks for the course.
